a sweet celebration

the griffins, the main asian and i went to dinner with elle to celebrate. this was a celebration for a large accomplishment of her hard work and dedication and perseverance. she's been engulfed with such a large project that has consumed her life over the past few months and this marks the end of her journey and she is now rewarded with much earned free time. to celebrate she chose a mexican place that we all love called la pinata in fremont. i have never had a bad experience at any of the locations for la pinata and i would recommend it to anyone in the area of one of their many locations! here is a picture of my pork enchilada plate.

after dinner we ended up at sweet orchid, also in fremont, for gelato. i was originally introduced to this place by brenda last year and i've been unable to stop going. tonight i was so intrigued with the idea of cilantro lemon sorbet that i bypassed the gelato completely. the flavor of both the mango and cilantro sorbet was pleasantly refreshing. literally there was a party in my mouth and my taste buds were dancing!

bake sale betty's

i'd heard about bake sale betty's in oakland from a friend and we'd tried but were never able to make it before today. i wanted to try the chicken sandwich since i'd heard good things and the pictures look so appetizing. they make a huge batch of fried chicken in the mornings and just sell sell sell all day long. this means the chicken sandwiches are not hot and are actually cold. the crisp on the chicken was good and it had a decent flavor that was spiced with cayenne pepper. instead of mayo or lettuce it was topped with a house made cole slaw. the cole slaw looks better than it was since i felt it was mostly bland. it was cabbage, parsley, red onions and green peppers with some type of oil/dressing to wet it. i felt it was lacking some type of creamy goodness or mayo. also i think they should have used cilantro instead of parsley to spruce it up a bit.

for dessert i got a pecan shortbread cookie which was divine!!! the also had strawberries short cake that my friend got and liked but i don't eat strawberries so i didn't try it even if it did look super tasty. they actually had several types of cookies and other one of desserts as well. one fun thing about bake sale betty's is that instead of tables you eat over an ironing board and sit on a stool. it's funny but it works and you just eat outside on the sidewalk in front of the store. if you look you can see that their menu is just handwritten on paper and posted if the front window there isn't even a menu inside.

alexis is a serious heart breaker! it's not like she tries to be but these poor boys don't stand a chance against her alluring looks, hip fashion sense, spirited personality and her optimistic up beat outlook on life. besides her full time job as a professional heart breaker she has recently graduated college and is currently working on putting her puzzle pieces in order. ever since i've know alexis she's been in the midst of one transition or another from going back and forth to/from school, work, boys, travels, an internship and life decisions. despite all these things twisting her life in many directions she is quick to pick herself up and move forward with a stronger sense of who she is. she's finally arrived at this crossroad in which she's been striving to reach for a long time. i'm so proud of her many accomplishments and excited for her to embark on a new adventure. to her i say embrace this fun and exciting time of new experiences that will shape your future. don't hesitate or second guess yourself. don't be scared to take risks and grab the bull by the horns. you know what you want now go get it!!

it's what i had..

i can't believe how much food is still in my fridge/freezer, it's seriously ridiculous!!! after the festival i wasn't hungry until 10pm rolled around and it hit me hard. i scrounged up some food and this is what i came up with.

peppers, onions, hot links and yes more garlic. i cut up the hot links and served it over rice since i didn't have any hoagie rolls.

garlic festival 2010

the griffins and i were so excited to eat our way through the gilroy garlic festival, and eat we did!! we decided that to enjoy some of everything we should share and not get full on any one item. here is a list of everything we ate: garlic pesto pasta, garlic bread, beer battered garlic fries, a pupusa, philly cheese steak, a garlic egg roll, virgin pina-colada, garlic thai chicken kabob and a fruit smoothie. the most unique thing i ate was the pupusa, since i had never heard of a pupusa i was intrigued. the shell was made of corn and was served with a little sauce on the side, to us it tasted a lot like enchilada sauce. i felt like this was an el salvadorean version of a quesadilla that meets an enchilada. the only thing lacking for me was the fact that there was no meat and only filled with cheese and green onions. even the no meat factor i thought it was delicious and the corn shell is why i'll try it again. if i had to choose my top three items were the garlic bread, beer battered garlic fries and the garlic egg roll. the bread was so soft and had the perfect amount of garlic & butter, the fries were great on their own but after adding garlic they were superb, and the eggroll was differnt from the norm with flavor bursting in every bite. overall the food was delicious and worth the admission price!

while around walking and eating i spotted a tent from a distance with a large sign. i saw a picture on the sign and i knew exactly what this meant. i rushed over to verify and sure enough the booth was for chef ryan scott. after waiting in line i was finally able to talk to ryan and told him i was the girl he purchased the dessert for at esin. he said he remembered me and called me beautiful.. hahahaha even if he was lying to get a sale, it worked. we ordered one twinkie and one ho ho and he even posed for me to take a picture.

adorable and he cooks..
hello ladies what more could a girl ask for?

city bistro

at my uncles forth of july bbq i met a friend of his that owns city bistro. it's not far from my work so i thought i should stop in. i'm sure glad i did cause my sandwich was sheer perfection. i hadn't realized it was a sit down place until i walked in and i'd suggest that if you are looking for an order to go that you call it in. while i was waiting for my sandwich i couldn't help but drool over the plates that kept passing me by. let me tell you it was worth the wait!! i ordered the rudolph giuliani and it was served with small portions of potato salad, coleslaw and pasta salad. when i say small portions i am in no way referring to the LARGE sandwich that was bursting with meat. i am not sure how they managed to pack so much flavor into a sandwich but i can't wait to go back and try more items off their expansive menu. if you are ever in the area for a few days and you feel like a sandwich this place is a must try!

china best

this place is not the best even if the name claims to be but china best is totally good. it's super fast, cheap and was on my way home from work. i'm gonna miss this place when i move. here is a picture of my last meal from here which was sweet and sour pork and tomato beef. the main asian and i shared both like usual so we can have two different dishes instead of just one.

lamb liberation

in my continued quest of an empty freezer/fridge i decided to tackle the lamb i received from one of my favorite people at work. he knows i love to cook and he told me to try this but i've been scared. it was my fist attempt with lamb and he thought this pre-marinated lamb would be nice to ease my way in. i think i cooked it wrong since the pictures i've seen keep the rack of lamb together and i cut it apart before cooking. i'd like to think it was cooked 'different' and not 'wrong' but either way they turned out great and they cooked really fast in my convection oven. i also made pasta salad and besides the bell pepper and zucchini showed in my picture i also added basil and read onion. i was impressed with the ken's dressing i used and i'd definitely buy it again. i had originally bought it to make a pasta salad when the dressing was on sale but never got around to it until now. i also made cheesy basil french bread. oh this was so good and i'm for sure gonna make this again. i sprinkled some extra virgin olive oil on the bread, then added some fresh basil and topped it with mozzarella cheese so the cheese would keep the basil from falling off. over all i was satisfied with the meal but i'm still not sure i'm ready to take lamb head on yet.

odon festival

the main asian invited me to a japanese festival in mountain view today. i ate vegetable tempura, a beef teriyaki stick and corn on the cob. i'm not sure how the corn on the cob fit into the japanese theme but it still sounded so good and it was. my favorite was the tempura of course and the batter was perfectly crispy and very tasty. i was however less impressed with the beef teriyaki which i felt lacked a true teriyaki flavor and feel since it was served as a kabob. i feel the need to say that this picture of the corn is not the ear i ate since i forgot to snap a shot. i ended up zooming in on a little girl near me who was also eating corn and i stole the picture. after eating we sat down for a few rounds of bingo. the games were only 50 cents a board or 3 boards for a dollar so naturally we played 3 boards per game. after a few games i ended up scoring bingo and won a 4GB USB. all the other prizes were things i already have and didn't want to pack so the USB was an easy choice to make. i'm not sure how long we were playing before i won but it wasn't very long and the poor main asian was less than thrilled so we continued to play so she could try her luck. sadly she didn't win but she still had fun playing.

for dinner we ended up at a thai restaurant near my new place called thai garden. i was so excited to try it since it's so close to where i'm moving but i'm sad to report the food was ok at best. even thought i ate the green curry i wasn't very flavorful and was more like soup. the other dish we ordered was a fried pork which was in my opinion better than the curry but still didn't impress me much. believe me this picture looks better than the food actually tasted, that's because i'm such an amazing photographer.. hahaha!

pakwan

our search is over!! we found a place in palo alto and will be moving in a few weeks. after signing our lease elle and i decided to pick up food to go from pakwan. while i do enjoy indian food my last experience was with a friend just over a year ago. we hit up an indian buffet near my work and were both sorely disappointed with the lack of flavor. i know we should've realized that an indian buffet was not the best idea. since then i hadn't thought much more about trying a new place. elle has mentioned a few times to me about pakwan because this is where she goes with her coworkers. it was getting late but i was hungry and mentioned that i was still interested in trying this place. i ordered chicken tikka masala, rice and nan. let me tell you that pakwan has redeemed all indian food for me. there is no comparison to the shady buffet i previously ate. thank you pakwan for the enlightening experience! i'm now going to add indian food back into my rotation. i hope we can find a good place in our new neighborhood.

throwback thursday - summertime

i love the way sublime changed up the reggae and punk scene with the fusion of the two genre's. their unique spin on music has made this song my number four throwback pick. this isn't my favorite song by sublime but it's a good one plus it's 'summertime and the livin's easy'. i was not able to see them live before bradley passed but in 1998 i did get to see the remaining members perform as the long beach dub allstars. although they are no longer together i thought they put on a great show.

punky

punky - besides being an obvious bombshell with to die for luscious locks, she has the most infectious laugh on this planet!! seriously, she can light up a room when laughing and you'll find yourself joining in even if you have no clue what's going on. her spunky fun loving energetic personality always seems to bring out the crazy side of our group.

tid bits from punky's past:

1. punky's pet - her childhood pet was a black and white tuxedo cat with white paws named booboo stealth crutch snapper kat the 3rd, aka 'booboo'.

2. punky's prank - after drawing all over the inside of her mothers car punky knew she was going to get a spanking. so she prepared for whatever fate might thrown at her. when punky's dad put her over his knee for a paddle he lifted her dress only to find toilet paper falling out of her tights. that's right, punky and her brother had stuffed an entire roll of toilet paper in her tights to soften the spanking. her dad laughed so hard she didn't even get spanked.

big mac

tonight i ate a big mac meal. thnks to my uncle i'm no rookie when it comes to big mac's. in fact i've been downing this exact meal since long before i should have been physically able to finish it. when i was younger my uncle would take my brothers and i to mcdonald's for lunch. the catch was we had to spell whatever we wanted to eat before we were allowed to order it. that's right folks a shopping list for lunch at mcdonald's. we had to write down all the items and my uncle would check our list for spelling errors. if we didn't spell it correctly we didn't get to order it. as some of you know i've never been a spelling champ so a hamburger, chicken nuggets, a chocolate or strawberry shake was out of the question. although my uncle encouraged me to look things up in the dictionary i always had my excuse of how do i look a word up that i don't know how to spell. i know i'm stubborn and because i'm stubborn i stared throwing back big mac's and cokes at an early age. thanks uncle for supporting my large appetite at such a young age.

finally out of the fridge

it pained me to know that for the past 3 days this chicken was soaking in a homemade teriyaki sauce made by my uncle and that i didn't have a chance to eat it. finally after marinating for several days i was able to get it out of the fridge. i decided to cook it on the foremen since it was only for me. the chicken turned out good but it definitely lacked that extra delicious flavor from cooking over a grill. for sides i cut up some potatoes and made wedge styled fries and homemade mac & cheese.

brenda

pretty women wonder where my secret lies. i'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size. but when i start to tell them, they think i'm telling lies. i say, its in the reach of my arms, the span of my hips, the stride of my step, the curl of my lips.
i'm a woman.
phenomenally.
phenomenal woman, that's me.
- maya angelou

brenda - yes she got a big ol' butt and although she can shake her money maker there is much more to her. brenda is fueled with a special zest for life and is ready for any challenge. she's a unique person who keeps things real and is not afraid to be an individual. her huge heart and willingness to serve others will take her far. brenda is gorgeous inside and out and she truly embodies all the characteristics of a beautiful and phenomenal woman!

a-list

since i've kept this blog and myself anonymous i've decided to make my friends anonymous as well. in order to keep track of who is who i gave each of them a new identity. i'll write a short post about each of them, this will be posted next to their name and will be about the individual that they are. i thought it would also be fun to let my friends have a chance to put a little spin on things and share with you something that is relevant to them. this will be in the form of but is not limited to: a quote, advice, life experiences, a poem or anything that fits the person they are. i'll end the posts with a song of my choosing that i believe encompass each of my friends. there is no special order just posting my thoughts as i get their finishing touches.

* i haven't added everyone but i will continue to add friends as i get their info and i will introduce new characters as i have more stories to share.

i've been blessed abundantly with wonderful friends!! i'm so grateful for each and every one of you. thank you for your unconditional love and support. i treasure the memories i've made with you through the years and i look forward to making many more.

grand slam in oakland

we went to an a's game today for our friends 30th birthday. it started with a tailgate party, free a's shirts, the a's got a grand slam, then she got her name on the scoreboard and we ended things on the field with fireworks. not sure what it is about fireworks at the games but they do a really great job. in fact i didn't even bother watching fireworks on the forth since i knew i'd see them tonight.

seven nine

yes i realize today is only the 9th and that we're two days away from the 11th. if you're unaware of the significance of july 11th let me be the first to share the news. it's free slurpee day!! i had to partake early since i knew i was unable to get my free slurpee. if you happened to miss out too just remember for next year. i am however sad to report that the size of a free slurpee has drastically downsized, i guess beggars can't be choosers.

esin

the main asian, elle and i dinned at esin. i was very excited to order their delicious risotto again, so excited in fact that i ate my entire plate before i remembered to snap a shot. yep, that's my empty plate that only moments before held my pesto risotto.

i also ordered the painted hills burger and fries. i was hungry and i got the small risotto plate so it should only count as a starter or salad... right? i've never ordered the burger there so i was pleasantly surprised and really impressed. the meat was cooked perfectly with no pink yet still juicy, just the way i like it. the bun was soft and fresh with a great accent of melted cheese.

sala thai

fremont may not be a large stop on the map but if you are ever in the area for lunch or dinner i recommend you eat at sala thai. this place is heavenly to say the least. the food is so fresh and flavorful, they even ask how spicy you want each dish. i am really going to miss this place once i move to the peninsula! elle and i ordered several dishes to share and here is a picture of my plate filled with green curry, pad see eiw, pra ram and steamed rice.

description/translation:
green curry - green curry paste in a coconut milk w/bamboo shoot, eggplant, bell pepper and sweet basil
pad see eiw - stir-fried flat noodle w/egg, broccoli and chicken
pra ram - steamed spinach, broccoli and string bean topped w/sauteed pork & peanut sauce

we finished with sweet sticky rice and mango of course!!

4th of july 2010

my uncle has an amazing talent for grilling. he makes his own delightful terriakki sauce that he marinates the meat in. when i'm lucky he sends me home with a bottle or two but my meat never turns out as good as his even if i use the special sauce.

here is a picture of some of the side dishes, keleguin, corn, red rice and potato salad.

my uncle also makes phenomenal chili!! i look forward to it every time he makes it. it's got great flavor, tons of meat and a kick that is just right.

dj earworm

here is a mash-up from dj earworm who i really love!! he's a complete genius when it comes to song compilations. i’d love to have him one day spin at one of my parties or at least a party i’m attending. i first heard of him in 2007 driving home from work. the next day i searched and could not find his songs anywhere. i did however find him on myspace so i messaged him and when he responded he was nice and he really appreciated my wanting to purchase his mash-ups. since he doesn’t sell his stuff he gave me some links to download. i have been following him ever since and i haven't been disappointed yet. enjoy his latest and greatest and also an older one that you can add to you summer jam mix for your fourth of july parties. i will say one thing about the song.. i could do without the justin's in this mix (aka bieber & timberlake) but it does work and he knows whats up better than i so i’ll let it slide.

food + fair = fried fun

i don't love rides so if i go to the alameda county fair it's for the food. this year was no different. i arrived at the fair hungry and ready to eat my weight in grease but i couldn't settle on where to start. i had originally wanted to eat a corn dog but when i saw them i wasn't sold. so andrew and i walked around the entire stretch of fair 1 1/2 times before i was pointed in the right direction of the right corn dog. liz knew i was set on it so when she called to tell me what she saw one i knew that i had to check it out. i ordered the jumbo corn dog and when she picked it up i told her i had my sights set on a bigger one. the monster dog, indeed it was!! no joke it was as big as half my arm. the hot dog itself was good but i think the batter is what made this meal on a stick. since i wanted other food besides just the corn dog i shared it with the main asian and i'm glad i did cause it really was a beast and this was just the beginning.

after we downed the dog we walked around and met up with brenda who arrived a little later than us. we ended up at a booth that sold deep fried ravioli's so elle and i split an order. i was expecting them to be breaded like they are at olive garden but instead it was not. they were big and they were drenched in marinara sauce. my only regret with this is that we shared them.

my friends got chocolate covered bacon and gelato. i tried a bite of the bacon but was not impressed although it was interesting enough to try once. i wish the bacon was crispy and i think that could've helped with the taste as well. i passed on gelato and was on the hunt for a deep fried snickers. i've always wanted one and tonight i was finally able to cross it off my list of things to try. the snickers was dipped in a batter then sent to be deep fried where it was cooked to perfection. marrying the elements of melting chocolate and carmel to the sweet fried batter of goodness. i was a little uncertain of how this was going to be pulled off but someone smarter than i knew this was a winning combination. normally you try to avoid a melted snickers but after this i'm convinced this is how it should be eaten. of course it's not something you should eat often but if you have a chance to try it i'd suggest that you do. andrew ordered the deep fried oreos which he said were really good but i didn't try since i'm not a huge fan of oreos.

after the snickers i needed a drink and something salty. i ordered a frozen strawberry lemonade. you might not have known it then since i drank nearly all of it, even with my brain in a freeze, but was not happy with my choice. i think i could've found a stand that had a better version of this normally refreshing drink but this one was just cold and sour.

i finished the night with garlic fries since the curly fries were sold out. these garlic fries were fine but they are not even comparable to the fries at giants stadium. luckily they hit the spot and i finished my food frenzy on a good note.
